If you check out the book above you’ll get the full story but the TLDR on the secrets of KFC are 1) pioneering the use of pressure fryers to make crispy fried chicken, fast and delicious also 2) the signature spice blend that made KFC taste like KFC.
I thought this was a closely guarded secret… and it was for a while.
Then, as rumor has it, the Colonel sold the recipe to a spice manufacturing company under the condition that it could not be marketed or related to KFC.
I found this out a number of years ago and ever since I’ve been using this as my fried chicken seasoning… and it’s so delicious.

The magical seasoning is from the Marion K Spice Company and is called 99-X Chicken Seasoning.
The smallest batch you can get is enough for 100lbs of fried chicken but it’s worth it IMO to get your hands on the spice blend and use for other applications as well.
The blend is magically delicious and hits all the notes on your palate that make a great fried chicken.

Kung Pao & Beyond is a wonderful book covering East and SE Asian fried chickens written by one of the most knowledgeable food writers in Asia.
Highly recommend checking this out. It’s a great reference and has a ton of actionable information to help you in the kitchen
