2024 is officially here and I’m dropping a recipe for you today that is dead simple and only requires a few ingredients… literally.
With the cool winter temps here this is the perfect time for a soul-satisfying and comforting soup that is
-packed with protein
-extremely cheap to make
-an absolute flavor bomb to enjoy
-possibly the shortest recipe I’ve ever had to write
The other bonus is that since this is a soup you can make it bulk and freeze it into individual portions or feed a crowd plus leftovers.
Taking an old classic and making it vibrant with no extra effort… let’s cook! 👨🍳
Split Pea Soup
I wrote over the last few months when launching Craken Spices & Seasonings that when you have high quality spices you end up needing to use less and get more flavor than with regular seasonings you get at the store.
Here’s an example. In the soup below there is no chopping vegetables. Just a few ingredients, water, and some good seasonings. I did this as a test and it came out so good I’m publishing ut now for you.
The bone and meat comes from a leftover cooked bone-in ham which is a great flavor hack and economical (you can find these on sale often). When trimmed after carving ham is also very lean so you’re getting good protein and low fat.
Simply shred the leftover meat off the hambone and throw it in the pot with the bone (The bone gives a lot of flavor that you get in a good bone broth even in a short cook time).
Ingredients
2lbs split green peas
(1) Meaty ham bone (or ham steak or ham hock)
7.5 c water
1.5 tsp sea salt
4 tsp Craken Carne Seasoning
2 bay leaves
Craken Finish Seasoning, when serving
Method
In a dutch oven combine all the ingredients
Bring to a simmer, cover and cook for 30 mins.
Turn off the heat, remove the cover and allow to cool slightly (the soup will be really hot)
Shred the meat off the hambone, add back into the soup and discard the bone
Serve in bowls and sprinkle with Craken Finish.
Done
You might think this recipe is laughably short but this was delicious and easy
In my food tracking app, “Split Pea Soup with Ham” comes out at:
169 cal per cup
12 g protein
2.5 fat grams.
For a very satisfying cup of soup, those are solid numbers IMO. 2x-3x it and you have a perfect lunch.
To Recap:
-No knives or chopping necessary
-7 ingredients total
-30 mins cook time
-Using leftovers
-Budget friendly
-Can bulk make
When you have great spices and seasonings you can turn the most humble ingredients into a delicious meal with no effort required!
